Data Backup: Why it is Important
We have all been there—data loss. Your computer has finally crashed or restarted itself without you prompting it to, and now you have lost all of that work you put so much effort and time into. Data loss-- it’s real, and it’s real annoying and extremely time consuming. It is something that probably dwells in the back of our minds at all times, especially when working on that important presentation you’re on a deadline for tomorrow. There’s always the possibility it will happen to you, and when it does… will you be prepared?
Backing up your data and your projects as you work on them should be a no-brainer by now. However, there is still something like one-third of people out there who have never once backed up their computer data. This is actually kind of a shocking number; you would expect the majority of people to be more responsible with their data and important documents. Most don’t take into account that once it’s gone, it’s gone.
What are the actual chances this would happen to me?
Well, one cannot really tell honestly. It could happen at any given time, in any given place. It doesn’t even have to be a full on computer crash for you to lose data you may have attempted to save during that session on your computer.
People also don’t take into account those unlikely events that would cause you to lose data, amongst other things. If you are a victim of a fire, flood, or any other natural disaster, there goes your data along with everything else.
What are some ways I can back up my computer?
There is always the coveted external hard drive; a lot of people still feel really good about these. It could be the fact you are physically holding the device that has your data and information, or the fact that so many of them have incredible storage space, nothing should really go wrong. You can also opt for a blank CD; this seems a bit old school, but hey it still works!
You can also backup your files and data online nowadays. Especially if you are a Mac user, there is always iCloud. However, there are plenty of other similar programs out there built specifically to back up your computer.
So don’t fall victim to data loss—it is incredibly avoidable, take advantage of the options out there to protect yourself.
